Why Is My Pool Cloudy After a Cleaning?

Why Is My Pool Cloudy After a Cleaning?

You’ve just had your pool cleaned — the debris is gone, the walls are brushed, and the water’s been treated — but instead of a sparkling blue oasis, you’re left staring at cloudy water. Don’t panic! Cloudiness after a cleaning is common and usually temporary. Here’s why it happens and what you can do about it.

1. Debris and Dirt Stirred Up

During a deep cleaning, brushing the pool walls and vacuuming the floor can stir up fine particles, dirt, and algae spores that were previously settled. These particles can remain suspended in the water for a short time, making it appear cloudy until your filter has a chance to clear them out.

2. Chemical Imbalance

Adding chlorine or shock after a cleaning can temporarily cloud the water, especially if the pH or alkalinity levels are off. Shock treatments, in particular, can create a cloudy appearance as they oxidize contaminants. If your water is not properly balanced, the chlorine becomes less effective and may leave your pool looking dull or hazy.

3. Filter Needs Attention

If your filter isn’t running long enough or is clogged, it won’t be able to catch the fine particles floating in your water. After a cleaning, your filter should run continuously for 24–48 hours to help restore water clarity. You may also want to backwash your filter or clean out cartridges to improve efficiency.

4. Algae or Organic Contaminants

Even after cleaning, microscopic algae and organic material might still be present. If chlorine levels are low or your pool lacks algaecide, these tiny contaminants can cause haziness. This is especially common after hot weather or heavy use.

How to Clear It Up Faster:

✅ Run your pump and filter continuously for 24–48 hours

✅ Test and balance pH, chlorine, and alkalinity

✅ Add a clarifier to bind fine particles for easier filtration

✅ Backwash or clean your filter

✅ Avoid swimming until visibility improves

Cloudy water is usually a temporary hiccup after cleaning — but if the problem persists, it might signal a deeper issue. Contact Dingman Pools for a professional water test or system check-up to keep your pool crystal clear all season long!
