Winter Care for Pool Equipment: Tips to Prevent Damage
When the temperatures drop, your pool may be closed for the season—but your pool equipment still needs attention! Proper winter care for pumps, filters, and accessories can make a big difference when it’s time to reopen in the spring. Here’s how to protect your investment and prevent costly damage during the colder months.
1. Clean and Dry All Equipment
Before storing, thoroughly clean your pool equipment to remove dirt, debris, and any leftover chemicals. Drain all water from pumps, filters, heaters, and hoses. Moisture left inside can freeze and expand, cracking pipes or internal components. Allow everything to dry completely before putting it away.
2. Store Equipment Properly
Once dry, store removable equipment—such as pool cleaners, vacuum hoses, skimmer baskets, and ladders—in a dry, covered area like a shed or garage. Keep everything off the ground to avoid moisture buildup. For pool pumps and filters, remove drain plugs and keep them in a safe place so they don’t get lost over the winter.
3. Protect Pumps and Filters
If your pump and filter systems remain outdoors, cover them with a durable, breathable cover to protect against snow, rain, and debris. Avoid using plastic tarps, which can trap condensation and cause corrosion. For added protection, disconnect power and ensure all electrical connections are dry and secure.
4. Winterize Pool Plumbing
Make sure to blow out and drain all water lines connected to your equipment—especially the main drain, return lines, and heater. Frozen water in these lines can cause serious damage. A professional pool technician can use a blower to remove any trapped water and plug the lines to keep them dry all season.
5. Check on Equipment Periodically
Even though your pool is closed, it’s smart to check on your equipment every few weeks. Look for signs of pests, water buildup, or damage from wind or freezing temperatures. Early detection can prevent bigger problems come springtime.
Keep Your Equipment Safe All Season
A little effort now can save you from expensive repairs later. Clean, dry, store, and protect your pool equipment to ensure a smooth start-up when the weather warms up again.
