How to Raise the Water Level in Your Pool

How to Raise the Water Level in Your Pool

If your pool water level is low, don’t worry—it’s a simple fix! Whether your pool is open or still covered for the season, adding water the right way is important to keep your pool equipment working properly and your pool in good shape.

Let’s break it down step-by-step in a way that’s super easy to follow.

💧 Why Does the Water Level Matter?

Your pool needs the water level to sit about halfway up the skimmer opening (or slightly above it).

Think of the skimmer like your pool’s “mouth”—it needs water to “drink” properly.

If the water is too low:
❌ The pump can suck in air instead of water
❌ The system can lose suction
❌ Equipment can overheat or get damaged
❌ Your pool won’t circulate or clean properly

Keeping the water at the right level helps everything run smoothly and safely.

How to Add Water

If Your Pool Is OPEN

  1. Grab a garden hose
  2. Put the hose in the pool
  3. Turn the water on
  4. Let it fill until the water reaches halfway up the skimmer
  5. Turn the hose off

That’s it—super easy!

If Your Pool Cover Is STILL ON

This part is important and a little different—but still easy!

Step-by-Step:

        1. Peek under the cover – Lift a small corner of the cover just enough to see the water level.
        2. Slide the hose under the cover – Carefully push the hose under the cover so it goes into the pool water.
        3. Turn the hose on slowly – Make sure the hose stays in place and doesn’t pop out.
        4. Let the pool fill – Give it time! You may need to check it every so often.
        5. Check your progress – Lift the cover slightly again to see if the water is getting close to the skimmer level.
        6. Turn the water off when it’s ready – Once the water reaches about halfway up the skimmer, you’re good to go.

⚠️ Important Tips

✔ Don’t overfill—too much water can cause problems later
✔ Make sure the hose stays inside the pool (not on top of the cover!)
✔ Check every 30–60 minutes so you don’t forget it’s running
✔ If you’re unsure where the water level is, ask for help

When Should You Add Water?

You should top off your pool:

        • Before opening your pool in the spring
        • After heavy water loss from evaporation or backwashing
        • Anytime the water drops below the skimmer

Keep It Simple

Adding water to your pool is one of the easiest ways to keep your system running properly. Just remember:

Mid-skimmer level = happy pool system
