How to Clean a Cartridge Pool Filter
Unlike sand and DE filters…
Cartridge filters are NOT backwashed.
Instead…You simply remove the cartridge and wash it with a garden hose.
It’s easy!
When Should You Clean It?
Watch the pressure gauge.
When pressure increases 8–10 PSI above your clean starting pressure, it’s time.
Step 1: Turn the Pump OFF
Safety first!
Never open the filter while it’s under pressure.
Step 2: Release Air Pressure
Open the air relief valve on top of the filter.
This removes pressure inside the tank.
Step 3: Open the Filter
Remove the clamp or lid.
Lift the cartridge out.
Step 4: Spray It Clean

- Using a garden hose…
- Spray between every pleat.
- Start at the top.
- Work your way down.
- You’ll see dirt wash away.
- Continue until clean.

Step 5: Inspect the Cartridge
Look for:
❌ Tears
❌ Cracks
❌ Broken bands
❌ Worn fabric
If damaged… Replace it.
Step 6: Put It Back Together
Place the cartridge back into the filter.
Secure the lid.
Close the air relief valve.
Turn the pump ON.
Open the air relief until water sprays out steadily.
Close it.
Done!
When Should I Replace the Cartridge?
Most cartridge filters last:
